Description

Hello, I've compiled coreboot for my Lenovo M700 Tiny, to have other processor support (Kaby Lake/Coffee Lake).

The ed2k payload works correctly, I can successfully boot a Kaby Lake and Coffee lake CPU with Coreboot (original Lenovo BIOS is Skylake-only).

I report two annoying issues:

  • wif card pci-e slot is not working, the card is not enumerated at all. ASPM on or off, no difference (with ASPM ON I get continous AER errors in dmesg on Linux). With original OEM BIOS the wifi (Intel 8260 wifi5 chipset) 100% works. On coreboot I get only the bluetooth part working (I know it's on the USB bus, so I think it's normal).

  • I use libgfxinit for graphics part: works correctly at boot, Linux booting always OK, but Windows 11 fails to initialize the displayport output i.e. it gets TURNED OFF for some reason when windows starts. I have to unplug and plug the cable back to have display back ON. This also does not happen with original OEM firmware. Maybe I must use a GOP ? I could not find a clear guide on how to compile/initialize coreboot w GOP into coreboot. Maybe I can run it into an .efi binary (I have all .efi GOPs somewhere..) ?

New findings: it seems there's a switch(GPIO?) in the OEM/Lenovo BIOS on M700 Tiny that disables the wifi completely.

I've found it hidden into AMI BIOS Devices-> Network Setup -> Wireless LAN (enable/disable).

When I set it "disabled" it behaves as coreboot does i.e. NO CARD.

So my Intel 8260BGW wifi card gets disabled when I use coreboot.

I hope there's a fix.

The intel GOP driver is integrated into FSP. In make menuconfig, switch Devices -> Graphics Initialization to Run a GOP driver. This will enable the FSP GOP driver, no extra blobs are needed (apart from VBT but that is in tree and should be automatically added when you set the option to GOP).

wif card pci-e slot is not working, the card is not enumerated at all.

Hmm I tested with Intel AX210 and currently have a Realtek RTL8125 card in there and it works for me without any apparent issues. Your logs show that the root port is enabled but nothing is detected at all which is weird.

  • Does the same issue happen with a Skylake processor, if you have one to test with?
  • Could you boot into stock BIOS with the wifi card enabled and do a dump of GPIOs using inteltool? (in coreboot repo's util/inteltool directory, run make and sudo ./inteltool -g)

I did it, but I get no display with this method. No display on VGA port, no display on DP1 port no display on DP2 port. I think machine is running, I get USB devices prepped, but no display. Works with default setting (libgfx). Will try again on a clean coreboot git clone.

Yes, both SKylake or KabyLake, slot is not enumerated. I get PCI AER errors on Linux, then "card present / no link" continous errors in dmesg.

The intel GOP driver is integrated into FSP. In make menuconfig, switch Devices -> Graphics Initialization to Run a GOP driver. This will enable the FSP GOP driver, no extra blobs are needed (apart from VBT but that is in tree and should be automatically added when you set the option to GOP).

Hmm I tested with Intel AX210 and currently have a Realtek RTL8125 card in there and it works for me without any apparent issues. Your logs show that the root port is enabled but nothing is detected at all which is weird.

  • Does the same issue happen with a Skylake processor, if you have one to test with?

Yes, both SKylake or KabyLake, slot is not enumerated. I get PCI AER errors on Linux, then "card present / no link" continous errors in dmesg.

  • Could you boot into stock BIOS with the wifi card enabled and do a dump of GPIOs using inteltool? (in coreboot repo's util/inteltool directory, run make and sudo ./inteltool -g)

I can confirm 100% that FSP GOP DRIVER is NOT WORKING on M700 tiny with any Skylake/Kabylake CPU.

I do not get any video output on any port, testes right now with vanilla coreboot and vanilla config freshly compiled.

Libgfxinit works OK but display ports get uninitialized when booting windows 10/11.

Once windows has booted, the display stays OFF: I have to unplug/plug the cable to activate display.

This does not happen in Linux: once the kernel has loaded the gfx driver, it works straight away.

The display ports also work correctly with Lenovo OEM original bios i.e. they get correctly initialized when windows 10/11 boots, the display does not turn off (linux always OK).

Not a real solution but have you tried taping/isolating pcie pin(s) on the Wifi adapter mini-pcie/ngff? Found some examples see blog thecomputerperson

Can you also post the GPIO output with the inteltool of the OEM BIOS but than with the BIOS option of the Wireless lan to "disabled"(versus the enabled you did earlier) maybe a simple diff might reveal a solution?

Perhaps do the same for the superiotool -dV, with OEM BIOS with the wireless adapter enabled and once while its disabled?
