flashrom

There seem to had been personal issues with flashrom internal development and that is why there is the split to flashprog. Flashprog is evolving but flashrom have the known tool name. It is for example a relevant amount of work for linux package maintainers on every single linux distro to have to change things. At the moment flashrom and flashprog projects are both active.
Also from the user point of view this is not ideal because the user read in an older howto that they have to use flashrom but for example heads is now using flashprog and libreboot also advertise flashprog.

From the history point of view, there are still old websites telling people to install Apache OpenOffice and there are still a relevant amount of downloads on the apache website.

At OpenWrt happily the project split to 'LEDE' went back to OpenWrt https://openwrt.org/about#joint_future

The longer flashrom and flashprog stay split, the more different the code would be at the end. There are so many opensource project videos that explain why there should not be more and more forks. Especially when the fork does not add any benefits for the users. And the users just want to flash their SPI chips and there are no user things like a users who like 'the style of KDE4 better then Plasma' or other user related things in the split of flashrom and flashprog.
